Admission

In considering applications, we assess candidates' specific disabilities and abilities as well as their levels of academic, intellectual, speech & language, and social/behavioral/emotional functioning to determine whether they will benefit from our program. Accotink Alternative considers students who require learning, speech/language, and/or emotional support for admission.

Step 1: Information Needed to Apply
Please submit the following information on the student:
> Current IEP or IIP
> Current Assessment & Evaluation Reports
> Recent Report Cards
> Standardized Testing Results
> Transcripts
> Any other relevant information

The Admissions Team will review this information and either request an interview or provide referrals to other more appropriate schools in the area.

Step 2: Interview
The Admissions Team, applying student, family and referring agents discuss the Accotink Alternative program and how we might address the student's needs. Following the interview, the Admissions Team will either schedule a two-day visit for the student or provide referrals to other more appropriate schools in the area.

Step 3: Two-Day Visit
The applying student is paired with a peer while visiting classes similar to the ones s/he would be taking. Parents are also invited to observe classes and talk with teachers. Teachers are asked gauge the student's academic strengths, learning styles and potential for a "goodness of fit" within our educational setting. Following the visit, the Admissions Team will invite the student to enroll in our program or provide referrals to other more appropriate schools in the area.
